Basketball Portal Power: Rutgers and Maryland

Hello everybody. College basketball rosters have the look of a drunk game of Yahtzee these days, so we will take a moment to try and figure out who is on your team. With the ever changing eligibility rules, I’d rather move used refrigerators, so keep in mind the sacrifices I’m making for our readers.

Rutgers

Shot Into the Sun: Well, that was hardly worth it. Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey are going to get drafted very early and Rutgers will no longer be Duke North. A trio of outgoing transfers are also hitting, most notably center Lathan Sommerville (Washington, B1G on B1G crime) to go along with Jordan Derkack (Dayton) and Jeremiah Williams (Georgetown). The eligibility reaper has come for Tyson Acuff and Zach Martin.

Still Standing: Hey, they at least get a Dylan back. Forward Dylan Grant became a mainstay in the rotation last season as a freshman, and he’s back. Guard Jamichael Davis also returns. They also get back a couple lightly used players in center Emmanuel Ogbole and forward Bryce Dortch.

Hi Everybody I’m New Here: Three transfers and six, count ‘em, six freshmen. The best name is junior big man Baye Fall who comes from Kansas State. It’s not SkyFall, it’s BayeFall. They also grabbed junior wing Darren Buchanan from George Washington and junior guard Tariq Francis from the New Jew Jersey Institute of Technology, I guess to take everyone’s tests.

No lottery prospects this year among the frosh. The highest rated prospects are four star forward Chris Nwuli and guard Lino Mark. Joining them are three star center Gevonte Ware and guard Kaden Powers. Pikiell also went overseas for forwards Harun Zrno out of Bosnia and Denis Badalau from Romania. Zrno was originally committed to Indiana, for what that’s worth. Probably nothing.

Maryland

Shot Into the Sun: Head coach Kevin Willard shot himself into the sun, or at least to Villanova. Following him into the portal is basically everyone besides Derik Queen, who is headed to the NBA. Do everything guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie headed to Tennessee. B10 on B10 crime sent Rodney Rice to USC. Braden Pierce, Tafara Gapare, and guard Malachi Palmer followed their coach to Villanova.

Also to the portal were Deshawn Harris-Smith (Georgetown), Jahari Long (George Mason), Chance Stephens (Minnesota), and Jay Young (Bryant). Julian Reese entered the portal despite having no eligibility, while Jordan Geronimo accepted his fate.

Still Standing: Testudo returns as the mascot after securing a proper NIL package.

Hi Everybody I’m New Here: The Big Coach Shuffle brings Buzz Williams to Maryland, formerly of TAMU, Virginia Tech, and Marquette. He brings with him Old Friend and big man Pharrel Payne, formerly of Minnesota, as well as forward George Turkson and guard Andre Mills. They also swiped guard Myles Rice from the Hoosiers. Filling out the roster are guards David Coit and Rakease Passmore (Kansas), senior forward Elijah Saunders (Virginia), junior guard Isaiah Watts (Wazzu) and center Collin Metcalf (Northeastern).

Three freshmen, most notably Darius Adams, a five star guard from New Jersey by way of Indiana. He figures to get some minutes this season. Joining him are forwards Aleks Alston and Jaziah Harper. Whew, I think that is everyone.
