Bellarmine basketball makes special signing

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – He may not be the tallest on the squad, but Bellarmine head men’s basketball coach Doug Davenport said the Knights’ newly signed player might be the toughest on the team.

Bellarmine signed nine-year-old Isaiah White, who is battling leukemia, Thursday to be the newest Knight.

White was invited into practice, took part in a signing ceremony, complete with a basket full of new Bellarmine gear.

Davenport said he wants his players to learn from Isaiah and make a difference in the community.

“The awesome pedestal that you’re put on by playing college basketball, especially in this area, that it’s like, let’s not use it as something to shy from,” he said. “Let’s use it as something to embrace.

“We are really excited with Isaiah, Isaiah’s parents. It’s perfect. Huge basketball family,” he continued. “They were season ticket holders at Butler when they lived there. We hope we are going to see them at all of our games.”

White is the third child battling leukemia to become part of the Bellarmine program.
