WORCESTER, Mass. — Marcelo Mayer reminded the Boston Red Sox why he’s one of the top prospects in baseball with a strong spring.
He put an exclamation point on that run with a show at the plate during the two-game exhibition stop in Mexico this week. Mayer will still start the season at Triple-A Worcester and there’s a tough path to crack with the MLB infield of Alex Bregman, Trevor Story, Kristian Campbell and Triston Casas.
Nonetheless, the hype around Mayer is certainly as loud as ever around the Red Sox organization with his teammates leading the conversation.
“He’s had a groove all spring,” Roman Anthony told reporters at Polar Park. “I constantly try to remind people that he’s had a tough finish the last few years. He’s probably the best player I’ve ever seen. He’s a special player. It’s been funny to see the narrative kind of shift on him over the last two years. I’ve always said he’s a stud. He’s going to play in the big leagues for a long time.”
“That’s like the best example of someone who looks like they’re born to do it,” Shane Drohan told NESN.com. “Everything is so smooth and effortless. It’s almost like, ‘Oh, I’ve got an extra three hours today. I can go 4-for-4 and make a backhand play in the hole.’ That’s all of them. Just super talented guys.”
