Penn State star running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton have a new position coach with Stan Drayton set to take over that role. He is no stranger to managing championship expectations and standout talent in a running back room, taking part in two national title runs and working with several highly productive playmakers.
Drayton’s three decades of coaching experience spans different levels of collegiate competition, including a successful Big Ten stint with Ohio State, and features a jump to NFL action. Along the way, his pupils have included All-Americans, first-round draft picks, Pro Bowl selections and a College Football Hall of Fame inductee.
Now Drayton will get to work with a pair of senior running backs who each surpassed 1,000 rushing yards last season. Allen and Singleton have combined for nearly 7,000 offensive yards and 69 scores, and both are within striking distance of the No. 1 all-time rushing mark in program history.
“I’m not hiring anybody that I don’t think (they) will feel great about,” Penn State head coach James Franklin said at a Tuesday press conference.
During a postseason run in which Allen and Singleton totaled 902 yards and nine scores on 125 touches across four games, Franklin lauded his veteran tandem.
“They are really good complementary pieces,” Franklin said in December. “I know the expression is probably overused, but ‘thunder and lightning’ is a good expression or a good description for those guys. Nick has the ability to go the distance with his speed, his explosive ability. Kaytron is a violent, physical runner. … They’re both smart, high football IQ guys.”
Before we learn how things unfold for this dynamic duo under new leadership, let’s look at the best seasons put together by running backs who’ve played for Drayton…
