Bethune-Cookman’s baseball season ended in a classic nailbiter.

Playing No. 2 Northeastern in the teams’ second game of the Tallahassee Regional, the fourth-seeded Wildcats rallied in the ninth inning, trimming their deficit to one run and putting runners on second and third with one out Saturday, May 31. But the Huskies hung on 4-3 for their first NCAA Tournament win since 1973.

B-CU tied the game in the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Northeastern jumped back ahead with a solo homer and a lost popup on the infield.

The Wildcats leave Dick Howser Stadium with a final record of 37-23. They won the SWAC championship last weekend.

Northeastern survives until Sunday.

Man oh man, Bethune-Cookman threatened.

The Wildcats scored a ninth-inning run on an error, cutting their deficit to 4-3. They put runners on second and third with one out.

But Northeastern’s Brett Dunham struck out Darryl Lee and then induced a grounder back to himself from Andrey Martinez to end the game. The win is the Huskies’ first in the NCAA Tournament since 1973.

B-CU’s season is over.

Bethune-Cookman lost a Gerety infield popup, letting it fall on the third-base side and allowing the second Northeastern run of the inning to score from second.

Gregory Bozzo was homerless all season.

Until now.

The Northeastern grad student drilled a solo shot to left field to put the Huskies up 3-2 with two outs in the top of the ninth.

That broke the tie that Bethune-Cookman fought to establish in the eighth.

Brand-new ballgame.

In the bottom of the eighth, after Darryl Lee doubled and Andrey Martinez singled, Jorge Rodriguez knotted the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to center field.

From there, Charlie Walker worked out of trouble for the Huskies. He fanned the last two batters.

Yoansell Diaz is coming in to pitch for B-CU.

Starter Edwin Sanchez’s day ends after seven strong innings and 107 pitches. He struck out seven batters.

B-CU turns to Carlos Jazmin out of the bullpen in the top of the eighth. The sophomore righty has a 4.94 ERA in 18 appearances.

The Huskies lead again.

Jack Goodman singles through the left side, plating Harrison Feinberg from second with one out. Goodman advances to second on the late throw home.

Bethune-Cookman tied the score in the fifth, but a double play ended the inning in controversial fashion.

Jorge Rodriguez grounded a ball to third base, and the throw home and subsequent tag beat Darryl Lee for the first out. Northeastern then tagged Rodriguez. He thought he fouled the ball off his leg, so he did not run to first base.

By NCAA rule, Bethune-Cookman could not challenge the infield grounder hitting Rodriguez’s leg (which, yes, the ball did touch him), but the Wildcats did call for a review of the play at the plate. Video confirmed Lee was out.

Who else but Andrey Martinez?

The same Wildcat who delivered the walk-off homer in the SWAC championship comes up with the breakthrough, game-tying hit against Northeastern. He rips an RBI double down the left-field line. With one out, B-CU has runners on second and third.

The Wildcats are still looking for their first run.

In the bottom of the fourth, they put two runners into scoring position with two outs, but Gottesman eliminated the threat with a strikeout. The Northeastern lefty has six punchouts through four frames.

Still 1-0 in Tallahassee. The Wildcats are coming up for their third trip to the plate.

In the top of the third, Northeastern threatened with two runners in scoring position, but Sanchez pitched out of the jam, inducing a popup to shortstop to end the frame.

The Huskies struck first.

Ryan Gerety led off the contest with a double to left-center. He moved to third base after a throwing error on pickoff attempt and trotted home on a one-out sacrifice fly by Harrison Feinberg.

Sanchez stranded another Northeastern runner at second base to end the inning.

The junior left-hander Edwin Sanchez takes the ball for the Wildcats. In 16 starts this season, he is 8-1 with a 3.09 ERA in 75⅔ innings.

Northeastern turns to another lefty, Jordan Gottesman (9-2, 2.30 ERA).
