BGSU announces Eddie George as new football coach

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (WTVG) – Bowling Green State University announced on Sunday that Eddie George, a former NFL All-Pro running back and Heisman Trophy winner, will be the next head football coach for the Falcons.

George had a legendary career on the football field at Ohio State University that saw him win college football’s most prestigious honor, the Heisman Trophy. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

His success continued into the NFL in 1996 when he was a first-round draft pick of the Houston Oilers. His NFL career included four Pro Bowl appearances, a Rookie of the Year award, and Super Bowl appearance.

The Philadelphia native was most recently the head coach of Tennessee State University where he was named the conference coach of the year in 2024.

He replaces Scot Loeffler, who left the university last month to accept a job as the next quarterbacks coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I am truly excited to be the head coach at Bowling Green State University,” George said in a statement. “Bowling Green is a wonderful community that has embraced the school and the athletics department. We are eager to immerse ourselves in the community and help build this program to the greatness it deserves. I am overwhelmed with excitement and joy for the possibilities this opportunity holds. I’m also thrilled to be back in the great state of Ohio, where I played my college football. I look forward to meeting the team, the coaches, everyone in the athletics department and everyone in the BGSU and Bowling Green community.”

BGSU plans to formally introduce George as the football program’s 21st head coach Monday, March 10 at 10:30 a.m. inside the Stroh Center.
