
COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Beau Hollins’ 3-run double gave the Gamecocks the 6-5 win over Winthrop Tuesday night (May 13) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
Kennedy Jones started the rally in the eighth with an RBI double that scored Evan Stone. Nathan Hall then singled to right to move pinch runner Cayden Gaskin to third. Henry Kaczmar followed with an RBI single that made it 5-3. Jase Woita reached on an error to load the bases and Hollins unloaded them with the double to the gap in right.
Winthrop scored its first three runs on solo home runs, two from Josh Skowronski. KJ Scobey hit his seventh home run of the season in the sixth, but the Eagles added two runs in the seventh to make it 5-1, which was followed by the five-run eighth for the Gamecocks.
Zach Russell earned the win on the mound in relief, striking out a batter in 1.1 innings. Parker Marlatt picked up his second save, pitching a clean ninth that included a strikeout.
Scobey and Kaczmar had two hits apiece to lead Carolina’s offense.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Carolina finishes midweek play with a 13-1 record.
- Jackson Soucie had a pair of strikeouts in a four-inning start for Carolina.
- The Gamecocks swept the two-game series with Winthrop, winning in Rock Hill on Feb. 18.
