Billy Napier’s seat at Florida is no longer hot.
On Thursday, Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin announced that the Gators‘ head coach will continue in his role through the season, putting an end to any remaining questions surrounding his job security in Gainesville. He would have been owed a hefty buyout from the Gators should he have been fired after the season regardless of Florida’s record.
“I am confident that Billy will meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. We will work alongside him to support any changes needed to elevate Gator football,” Stricklin said in a statement.

He added: “Gator Nation has remained strong, showing up game after game to stand with our team. This loyalty creates an incredible environment that inspires our players to compete with heart and determination. Now, I call on all of Gator Nation to continue standing behind Billy and his dedicated team while we work together to build a championship program.”
After starting the season 1-3, Florida has won 3 of its last five games since Sept. 21. In Florida’s two losses to then-No. 8 Tennessee and No. 2 Georgia, the Gators showed fight and were right in there with the Vols and Bulldogs. They lost to Tennessee 23-17 in overtime and 34-20 to Georgia following an injury to quarterback DJ Lagway.
