Simpson College baseball and softball players are honoring their late school president with special helmet stickers. Jay Byers died at age 54 this month after about two years leading the school. The 1993 Simpson graduate, who spent years as CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership before returning to the Indianola college, was rarely seen without his signature bow tie. So it’s fitting that Storm baseball and softball players will play out the season with bow tie stickers on the back of their helmets.”The only way you could describe President Byers was through his bow tie,” said sophomore softball player Katie Shaner. “He always wore it.”It was Shaner’s dad who pitched the idea of the stickers to softball coach Brent Matthias.
