Bulldogs QB Gunner Stockton heightening Georgia’s College Football Playoff hope by day

Gunner Stockton is all the rage these days. The Bulldogs QB stepped up against Texas in the SEC Championship Game and has the faith of many that he can lead Georgia to a title this January.

With Carson Beck out of the picture due to his elbow injury, all eyes are on Stockton.

Although a lot less experienced in groundwork than Beck, Stockton has shown promise — enough promise to keep the Bulldogs National title hopes alive after a pivotal change at the QB position.

CBS Sports analyst Josh Pate underlined his confidence in Stockton during a sit-down interview with Greg McElroy.

“When you have a deep program, you normally don’t have trash on the bench as the backup,” Pate said.

“You got a serviceable guy on the bench. And sometimes, Greg, it’s a guy the locker room may love.

“And I think if they can get to the title game – at that point they’ve proven they can win with Stockton – I am rolling actually with Georgia still to win the whole thing over what looks like a super team in Columbus, Ohio…”

Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman believes that Stockton’s fierce competitiveness sets him apart from Beck.

“The thing I probably noticed more than anything in watching those 80 plays is he’s an ultra-competitive individual. You can just tell by the way he celebrates, by the way he goes and finishes plays, he’s a competitor,” Freeman said, per On3.

“I don’t see it being tremendously different than what they’ve done all season. But we’ll prepare for anything.”

It should, though. Stockton is emerging as the Bulldogs’ lifeline.

The upcoming Sugar Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia will shine the brightest of spotlights on Georgia’s QB2 for most of the season.
