Cade Tyson’s next destination takes him on a similar path as another former Tar Heel

Remember Dawson Garcia?

Yes, the student-athlete who came to North Carolina for a few months before returning closer to home to join the Minnesota Gophers?

Well, Garcia is now out of college eligibility (at least we think he is, you never know in college athletics nowadays!). Now, Minnesota has looked to another former Tar Heel to fill the void of Garcia’s departure.

None other than Cade Tyson.

Joe Tipton of On3 reported that Tyson has committed to Minnesota. He will have one more season of college eligibility to work with.

Tyson transferred to North Carolina ahead of the 2024-2025 season and was regarded as one of the most highly sought-after transfers in the country. His first season in Chapel Hill didn’t go as planned at all, as he was used sparingly off the bench and struggled mightily offensively, the area of his game that was typically his strong suit.

In 31 games played, Tyson averaged 2.6 points and 1.1 rebounds per game, averaging just under eight minutes per contest. After shooting a staggering 46.5% from three-point range as a sophomore at Belmont, Tyson connected on less than 30% of his attempts as a junior (during his lone season in Chapel Hill), as he just simply couldn’t find a shooting rhythm in limited action.

Unfortuately, not all transfers pan out the way you hope they do, as Tyson will look for a fresh start for his final season of college basketball. The potential is still very much there, the hope is that he’ll be more comfortable at Minnesota, a place where he could earn an extended role (which should help him maintain some type of consistency with regard to shooting the basketball.

The UNC basketball program officially lost two members of last year’s squad on Sunday, as Tyson followed former teammate Ven-Allen Lubin’s announcement of his departure to in-state foe NC State.
