The foundation for the player Toni Bryant is now was built as an eighth grader playing varsity for Tampa (Fla.) North Tampa Christian Academy. Then, the burgeoning big was still relatively new to basketball, because football was his first love. He wasn’t sure which sport to choose to specialize in moving forward.
But his older brother, E.J Bryant, was a star for North Tampa’s basketball team, averaging close to 20 points per game. Bryant was already 6-6 and provided size many schools in the area didn’t have. And it didn’t hurt that he just wanted to be around his big brother as much as possible.
With EJ Bryant and another all-conference guard providing the scoring, Bryant focused essentially on one thing – keeping the other team from scoring. Turns out, he was a natural, averaging around six blocks per game before starting high school.
