Welcome to July football!
The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers will play in the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Thursday, July 31, the Hall announced on Wednesday.
“This game features two teams that can be considered legitimate contenders to reach Super Bowl LX next February,” Jim Porter, president and CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, said in a statement. “For them to face each other right out of the gate in Canton, Ohio, should create a dynamic opening to another spectacular NFL season.”
The first preseason game of the year will feature two playoff teams from the 2024 campaign, though neither lasted very long. L.A. was bounced by Houston on Wild Card Weekend, while the top-seeded Lions lost to Washington in the Divisional Round.
Neither the Lions nor the Chargers has appeared in a Hall of Fame Game since 1994. Detroit is 1-2 all-time, while the Bolts are 0-1-1; the latter’s 1980 appearance ended in the only scoreless game in HOF Game history.
The HOF Game will take place two days before the Enshrinement of the Class of 2025, which boasts four members, including Chargers legend Antonio Gates. The tight end spent his entire 16-year career with the Bolts, from San Diego to Los Angeles.
