College baseball: Catawba wins on Monday night for 2-2 road trip

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Catawba’s baseball team scored five runs in the seventh inning to beat Palm Beach Atlantic 9-5 on Monday.
The win was No. 992 for head coach Jim Gantt.
The win gave Catawba a 2-2 record for its Florida road trip. The Indians will be home at Newman Park for a weekend series with Shippensburg. First pitch on Friday is set for 1 p.m.
Sean Shelly’s first Catawba homer was a grand slam that gave the Indians a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Shelly, a first baseman who transferred from Barry, went 3-f0r-3 against Barry on Sunday.
Palm Beach Atlantic came back to take a 5-4 lead, but things unraveled for the Sailfish in the Catawba seventh with walks, wild pitches and a costly error.
Hayden Simmerson (Carson) pitched five innings for Catawba. He struck out eight, walked two and allowed four runs.
Brandon Rodgers relieved in the sixth, shut the door the rest of the way and earned the win.
Ty Hubbard (South Rowan) and James Dunlap scored two runs each. Matthew Connolly (West Rowan) had a double.

Emory & Henry’s Steven Smith (West Rowan) went 4-for-12 in a three-game series with Anderson. He scored five runs and drove in two.

Jalan Chambers (A.L. Brown) has relieved in two early games for Tennessee Wesleyan. He’s gotten three outs, all on punchouts.
