SALISBURY — Eighth-seeded Newberry put up a fight at Newman Park, but top-seeded Catawba won its South Atlantic Conference Tournament opener on Friday.
The Indians (38-12), ranked fourth in Division II, prevailed 8-4 over the Wolves (25-26).
Payne Stolsworth (10-2) was the winning pitcher. The former West Rowan Falcon shut out the Wolves until the sixth, but they scored one in the sixth and three in the seventh to cut Catawba’s lead to 5-4.
Cole Hales (Carson) had a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to give Catawba some breathing room.
Brandon Rodgers took over for Stolsworth in the seventh and got the last seven outs for his second save.
Nathan Chrismon (South Rowan) had two hits and three RBIs for the Indians. Sean Shelly had two RBIs.
The SAC tourney format has the 1-8-4-5 seeds playing a mini-tournament at Newman Park, with the 2-3-6-7 seeds playing in Hickory.
Catawba’s next game will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
