GRAMBLING — Grambling State racked up 15 hits and hit three home runs, but it wasn’t enough as GSU fell 19-10 to Texas Southern on Sunday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
GSU fell to 9-13 overall and 5-1 in the SWAC, while TSU improved to 9-16 and 4-2 in conference play.
Jaylyn Bennett, Chenar Brown and Keanu Jacobs-Guishard accounted for all three of Grambling State’s home runs. Bennett went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a double, while Jacobs-Guishard put together a three-hit day going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Sophomore outfielder Martavius Thomas also registered three hits, going 3-for-3.
Randy Reyes got the start on the mound for the G-Men, lasting two innings and allowing four runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Derrell Fletcher (0-1) was tagged with the loss in a relief appearance. He tossed one inning, surrendering five runs on four hits. Thomas Leiden, Ethan Bates, Taylor Dooley and Hampton Phillips also made relief appearances for GSU.
Trailing 4-0 in the of the second inning, Grambling State used a five-run bottom of the frame to take a 5-4 lead. Bennett’s three-run blast highlighted the frame for GSU.
Texas Southern regained the lead in the third inning, 6-5, on a two RBI single by Jonathan Trejo. TSU put up eight runs in the fourth inning to grab a commanding 14-5 lead.
Jacobs-Guishard smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to make a 14-7 game. After a solo homer by TSU’s Tyler Legendre in the top of the fifth, Brown answered with a solo shot of his own. Chris Marcellus’ sacrifice fly left GSU with a 15-9 deficit heading into the sixth inning.
Grambling State scored one more run in the sixth, but wasn’t able to string together a rally in the closing innings.
Texas Southern was led offensively by Kelton Phillips who went 6-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBI.
Sidney Moore (2-0) grabbed the win in relief for TSU. He pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Grambling State prepares for a cross-parish matchup at Louisiana Tech on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at J.C. Love Field and Pat Patterson Park. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
