WISE, Va. — The first game of Catawba’s three-game baseball series at UVA Wise was a train wreck.
The Indians got down 5-0 in a hurry and were steamrolled 12-2.
But Catawba came back to win the second and third games of the weekend series behind outstanding pitching by Payne Stolsworth and Hayden Simmerson.
Stolsworth (5-1) pitched a two-hitter to win the seven-inning nightcap of Friday’s doubleheader.
Catawba didn’t pound down the walls at Stallard Baseball Field , but Dylan Driver (Carson) and James Dunlap drove in a run apiece. That was enough for Stolsworth. The former West Rowan standout struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.
Catawba won a tough 6-4 game on Saturday to take the series. Most of the offense came from the top two spots in the lineup. Driver homered and drove in three. Dunlap had two hits and two RBIs.
Casey Gouge (West Rowan) started on the mound and made it into the fourth inning. Joe Burleyson (East Rowan), who pitched a scoreless fifth, got credit for the win. He’s 2-0.
Simmerson (Carson) earned his sixth save with four dominant innings. He allowed one hit and struck out four.
Catawba is 19-7 and 11-4 in the South Atlantic Conference. The UVA Wise Cavaliers are 19-10, 9-6.
