COLLEGE BASEBALL: Keystone wins NCAA opener

Keystone College won its opening game in the NCAA Division III baseball tournament with a 13-1 bashing of Penn State Behrend (30-9) on Friday afternoon at the regional in Granville, Ohio.

Robert Estrada, Andy Rivas and Griffin Yastremski each homered and Quinn Holt scattered five hits and walked two while striking out eight over eight innings to pick up the win for the Giants (36-9), who advance to face host Denison (36-6) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Denison defeated Manchester, 8-2, in the other game Friday at the regional. Manchester (29-13) plays Penn State Behrend in an elimination game Saturday at noon.

Estrada and Rivas homered in the first inning to give the Giants a 3-0 lead, and Yastremski extended it in the second inning with his blast.

The Giants pushed the 5-0 lead to double digits by scoring six in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-1. They added two more in the seventh, making it 13-1.

Chase Boyle, who tripled, had four hits and two RBIs for Keystone. Carlos Pascual, who doubled, Estrada, Rivas, who had four RBIs, and Yastremski each checked in with two hits for the Giants.

Lackawanna 23, SUNY Rockland CC 17: At Scranton, Lackawanna trailed, 14-0, after two innings, but rallied to win its first game in the NJCAA East District Tournament at Volpe Field.

The Falcons closed to within 14-12 after six innings, then erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the seventh. Grant Dalton had the big hit of the inning, a three-run home run.

Dalton finished with five RBIs. Brooks Henderson had four hits and two RBIs for Lackawanna (32-16). Tyler Lepage added three hits and three RBIs, Mark Zuppo chipped in three hits and two RBIs, while Deacon Brown and Nick Matson contributed two hits and two RBIs apiece. Jay Creighton, who threw two scoreless and hitless innings with one walk and three strikeouts, got the win.

Lackawanna is scheduled to face UConn Avery Point in the winners’ bracket final Saturday at 3 p.m. at Scranton High School. If the field condition is poor, the game will be held at Mid Valley High School. A decision will be made by 11 a.m. Avery Point won its opening game over Mercer County Community College, 11-10.

SUNY Rockland CC meets Mercer at 3 p.m. at Volpe Field. The losers’ bracket final is scheduled for 6 p.m.

On Sunday, the championship game is set for noon. Should a deciding game be needed in the double-elimination tournament, it would follow at 3 p.m.
