COLLEGE BASEBALL: Lackawanna reaches NJCAA East District final

Trey Sajeski twirled a complete-game four-hitter Saturday to help lead Lackawanna College to a 9-1, rain-shortened seven-inning victory over UConn Avery Point in the NJCAA Division II East District Championship baseball tournament at Scranton High School.

Sajeski allowed an unearned run with one walk and seven strikeouts to improve his record to 8-1 and advance the Falcons (33-16) to the championship Sunday at noon at Scranton High against either UConn Avery Point or SUNY Rockland Community. Those teams were playing Saturday night in the losers’ bracket final of the double-elimination tournament. A win would send Lackawanna to the NJCAA Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Park in Enid, Oklahoma, on May 24-31. Its opponent would have to beat Lackawanna twice Sunday to advance.

John Hughes and Louis Kegerreis each had two hits and two RBIs for the Falcons. Tyler Lepage, Nick Matson and Jack Friend had two hits apiece and Brooks Henderson drove in two runs.

Keystone 11, PSU-Behrend 5: At Granville, Ohio, after losing its first game of the day, Keystone College rebounded to beat Penn State-Behrend in the losers’ bracket final and advance to the championship of the NCAA Division III regionals.

The Giants (37-10) will face host school Denison College on Sunday at noon in the regional final. If Keystone wins, a deciding game will be held 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.

A six-run fourth inning by Keystone broke a 3-3 tie. Cooper Fesh ignited the outburst with a two-run double. Robert Estrada had an RBI groundout and Nate Ewing cracked a three-run double.

Ewing, Robert Estrada and Hunter Rauch had two hits apiece for the Giants. Griffin Yastremski hit a two-run home run and Chase Boyle had two RBIs. Winning pitcher Liam Powell struck out seven in seven innings.

Denison 10, Keystone 4: At Granville, Ohio, Denison College took an early six-run lead and defeated Keystone College in the winners’ bracket final at the NCAA Division III regionals.

Jake Blozy ignited a four-run second inning for Denison with a two-run home run before the Big Red added solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the advantage to 6-0.

Keystone cut the deficit to 6-4 in the top of the sixth on a grand slam by Carlos Pascual. But Denison answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jack Lutte homered in the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring.

Robert Estrada and Hunter Rauch each had two hits for the Giants. Sean Brennan (9-1) was dealt his first loss of the season, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in six innings.
