College baseball: Staten Islander Ty Mainolfi fitting right in at D1 U. of Dayton

DAYTON, OHIO — Simply put, Ty Mainolfi hasn’t skipped a beat at the collegiate level.

The University of Dayton infielder is only a freshman, but he’s started in 35 of the Flyers’ 39 games thus far and has done an admirable job at both the plate and in the field.

The St. Peter’s product is batting an even .300 (36 for 120) with 20 RBI and 24 runs scored. The lefty-swinging Mainolfi, who has drawn 18 bases on balls, has 11 extra-base hits (eight doubles, three homers), an .842 OPS and a .400 on-base percentage.

In addition, the Oakwood resident has swiped eight bases in nine attempts.

Mainolfi, who helped St. Peter’s win a pair of CHSAA Archdiocesan and one CHSAA Intersectional championships, has 10 multi-hit games this season, including a four-hit outing in a victory over UMass a few weeks back.

In Dayton’s most recent game Tuesday — a 10-8 non-league victory over Ohio — the 6-foot-1 frosh had three hits, scored the go-ahead run and knocked in an insurance run late in the game.

Mainolfi has also been solid in the field for 21-18 Flyers, who compete in the Atlantic-10 Conference. Dayton’s roster lists him as an infielder, but he’s primarily played second base and boasts a solid .965 fielding percentage with just five errors.
