As the old adage goes, “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
The Division I University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team tried and tried again 55 times before winning its first game in nearly two years on Saturday. The Hawks defeated the Towson Tigers, 14-7, in game two of a doubleheader at Meritus Park in Hagerstown, Maryland.
The win marked UMES’ first win since May 20, 2023 – the Hawks’ final regular season game that year and Senior Celebration Day. Their losing streak began that season as they ended the year with consecutive losses in the Northeastern Conference Tournament.
UMES went winless with an 0-48 record in the 2024 season, extending the program’s losing streak to 50 games. The Hawks began the 2025 season with an 0-5 record before beating Towson on Saturday. UMES lost game one of the doubleheader, 10-0, and fell behind 5-0 in the first inning of game two. However, the Hawks proved resilient by scoring in each of the next four innings to take a 11-7 lead and added late insurance for the 14-7 win.
“It definitely feels good to have that pressure off of our shoulders,” head coach Danny Acosta said, per UMES’ game recap. “However, tomorrow is another day, and we have to go back to work as Towson is a formidable opponent and a very well coached team. So, we have to continue doing our job.”
The Hawks followed Saturday’s win with a 13-9 loss to Towson on Sunday.
UMES’ next game is its 2025 home opener against Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday at Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex in Salisbury, Maryland.
