College Basketball: No. 22 Utah State at UNLV Prediction, Betting Odds & How to Watch

The Utah State men’s basketball team leads the nation with 16 wins and has opened the season 16-1 for the second year in a row. That is the Aggies’ third-best start to a season in program history, trailing their 24-1 start in 2008-09 and their 20-1 start in 2003-04.

The No. 22 Aggies, who are 6-0 in Mountain West play, hope to add another win to their record Wednesday when they go on the road to face UNLV, which is coming off back-to-back losses against Boise State and Colorado State.

Utah State’s offense has been all but impossible to slow down this year, even though the Aggies had to replace the bulk of last season’s starting lineup and head coach Danny Sprinkle, who left for Washington.

Utah State has scored at least 80 points in a game nine times this season, including in each of its past three wins. The Aggies are averaging 83.2 points a night, which ranks No. 2 in the Mountain West, and they lead the conference with a .496 team field goal percentage.

UNLV (9-7, 3-2 MWC) is near the bottom of the pack in the Mountain West standings, and the Rebels rank No. 9 in the 11-team conference with 71.9 points a game. They’re led by returning starter Dedan Thomas Jr., who is averaging 16.1 points a game.

Utah State at UNLV Prediction

I predict Utah State wins, 73-68.

The Aggies looked beatable for much of their last outing. Boise State led Utah State for almost the entirety of their game at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Saturday, but the Aggies came charging back and took the lead for good when Ian Martinez hit a 3-pointer and drew a foul with seven seconds left in regulation for a rare four-point play.

Utah State struggled against a hot-shooting, experienced squad from Boise State, but the Aggies showed grit and perseverance in fighting back, and Martinez showed he has ice in his veins when the game is on the line.

Martinez leads the team and ranks No. 5 in the Mountain West with 16.8 points a game. Fellow returner Mason Falslev is adding 16.4 points and 6.2 rebounds, and 6-foot-8 sophomore Karson Templin is chipping in with 9.8 points and 5.5 rebounds a night.

The Aggies just have too much firepower for UNLV, which is giving up an average of 71.1 points a game.

The Rebels will also have to make the most of every possession because Utah State doesn’t turn the ball over very often. The Aggies have committed less than 10 turnovers in a game seven times this season, including a season-low six against Boise State.
