COLLEGE BASKETBALL: OC defeats Strength N’ Motion in second day of Chapman Classic

MIDLAND The No. 13-ranked Odessa College basketball team had little to no trouble in putting away Strength N’ Motion Academy, recording a 96-40 win in the Bob Chapman Classic Friday at the Chaparral Center.

Playing their second game in the three-day tournament, the Wranglers moved to 3-1.

Odessa College was coming off a 73-59 win against Weatherford College from Thursday while Strength N’ Motion was dealt a 112-68 loss to Midland College the same day.

“We’ve got three good opponents in this tournament and Strength N’ Motion is a well-coached team,” Odessa College head coach Kris Baumann said. “They’ve had some Division I players come out of there, but we really needed this kind of game just for some of our younger kids to get in because we hadn’t had that opportunity too much this season. It was good to get some younger players in. We played pretty well.”

The Wranglers shot 34-of-66 from the field, going 13-of-29 on 3-pointers and 15-of-19 on free throws.

The team only had 12 turnovers.

Odessa College was led in scoring by Trey Maxwell’s 22 points as he went 8-of-9 on field goals, 5-of-6 on 3-pointers and 1-of-2 on free throws.

“He’s a good player,” Baumann said of Maxwell. “He was a highly-recruited guy and we’re happy to have him.”

Keder Belizaire had 16 points, going 6-of-10 on field goals and 4-of-4 on free throws for the Wranglers.

Odessa College had 13 different players score a basket in Friday’s game.

“It was nice to play some of the younger guys and freshmen and some of the guys that haven’t had much playing time in the first three games,” Baumann said.

Strength N’ Motion was led by Romeo Hall’s 10 points as he went 3-of-7 on field goals and had one 3-pointer while going 3-of-3 on free throws.

He was the only player on the team to score in double figures.

As a team, Strength N’ Motion finished 15-of-57 on field goals, 5-of-25 on 3-pointers and 5-of-8 on free throws.

The Wranglers began the game on a 9-4 run after hitting three outside shots.

Strength N’ Motion managed to get to a five-point deficit a couple of times in the first half before the Wranglers built a 21-10 lead with 8:12 left.

A slam dunk by Jayde Colon gave Odessa College a 25-10 lead with 7:27 on the clock and Strength N’ Motion called a timeout.

A technical foul on Strength N’ Motion’s Byron Piper sent Lawrence Mitchell to the line where he went 1-of-2 and Odessa College had a 31-13 lead with 6;10 left.

It wasn’t long before Odessa College had a 35-15 lead late in the half.

It was It was 48-22 at the half.

The Wranglers began the second half on a 6-4 run.

The Wranglers continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal and built a 68-30 lead.

A transition layup by Trey Maxwell made it 74-30 for the Wranglers with 6:14 left.

Odessa College used a quick 6-0 run to take a 50-point advantage.

The Wranglers were unable to get to 100 points, but it wouldn’t matter as the team secured the easy victory.

Odessa College will finish up its run in the tournament with a 1 p.m. Saturday game against the Northlake College Blazers at the Chaparral Center.

Northlake College won the NJCAA Division III national championship last year.

“Nobody may have heard of North Lake College, but they won the national championship last year so Saturday’s going to be a tough game.”

Strength N’ Motion will face Howard College at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Chaparral Center.
