College basketball rankings: Florida Gators enter top tier of AP Top 25 after massive win over No. 1
Florida Gators basketball moved to 15-1 in Year 3 under head coach Todd Golden with the program not only off to its best start in two decades but having defeated a No. 1-ranked opponent outside of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Gators have now won 13 of 16 games by double digits, too, including the biggest victory over a top-ranked team in 56 years.
Expectations have been raised for the Gators as this extremely talented roster has started the season hotter than any version of this team since the first that won a national championship. It is the first in program history to win 10 straight games by double digits to start a campaign.
Florida reached another high mark Monday when the latest college basketball rankings were announced. It jumped three spots to No. 5 in the AP Top 25 moving inside the top five for the first time since Dec. 4, 2017, and the first time this late in a season since Jan. 27, 2014. The Gators also received a first-place vote.
UF is also ranked No. 4 in the Coaches Poll — its highest-such placement this season — while moving up three spots to No. 5 in the NET Rankings with a 4-1 record against Quadrant 1 opponents. The NCAA Selection Committee uses those rankings — which largely evaluate quality of wins and losses — as part of their process in choosing the NCAA Tournament field.
Florida is playing two of the top four, four of the top 10, and eight of the top 25 teams in this week’s rankings — a total of 10 times — this season.
