College basketball roundup: Ridgewater hits its shots to beat Rochester

WILLMAR — The Ridgewater men’s basketball team shot well to hold off Rochester Community & Technical College on Saturday.

Ridgewater beat the Yellowjackets 82-71, making 51.8% of its shots, including 45.5% of its 3-pointers. The Warriors were 29 of 56 from the field and 10 of 22 from 3-point range.

Rochester, meanwhile, shot 42.3%, going 30 of 71, and made 4 of 22 3-point attempts, 18.2%.

Aiden Wichmann and DeAndre Holloway led the way for Ridgewater. Wichmann, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, had 21 points, making 5 of 9 3-pointers. Holloway, a 6-7 freshman from Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, had 20 points and seven rebounds.

Miguel Maloney added 14 points and Tyrese Mayo had 11 points, four assists and three steals.

The Warriors are now 2-1 in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference South Division and 10-5 overall. Rochester is 1-2 in the MCAC South and 12-6 overall.

Laden Nerison, a sophomore guard/forward from Kenyon-Wanamingo, had 17 points and Jamieson Lien, a 6-4 sophomore forward from Prior Lake, added 16 for the Yellowjackets.

Ridgewater next plays at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Minnesota State-Fergus Falls.

Rochester Community & Technical College had 11 players score and shot 48.7% from the field in its romp over Ridgewater at Willmar.

Macaya Copeland led the Yellowjackets with 20 points and had five assists and four steals. She’s a 5-foot-5 sophomore guard from Hopkins.

Rochester is now 2-0 in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference South Division and 13-3 overall. Ridgewater is 0-3 in the MCAC South and 1-14 overall.

For the second straight game, all five Ridgewater starters played the full 40 minutes.

Julie Hines had 16 points and Grace Jackson and Lily Dean each had 11 points. Hines is a 5-2 freshman from Randolph. Jackson is a 5-4 freshman from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa. Dean, who also had 11 rebounds and nine assists, is a 5-6 sophomore guard from BOLD.

Ridgewater next plays at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Minnesota State-Fergus Falls.
