PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team apparently has no rust whatsoever after not playing a game for 24 days over the winter break.
The Pirates came out of the their long break, beating Whatcom 85-34 on the road earlier this week. They played their first home game since early December on Saturday, crushing Edmonds 87-59.
The men, meanwhile, had one of the highest-scoring game of the year in the NWAC, falling to Edmonds 110-91.
The Pirates got up 23-8 after the first quarter and held a 48-20 lead at the half.
Peninsula had five women in double figures, led by Makena Patrick with 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Carliese O’Brien had 14 points and six steals, Shania Moananu had 13 points and six assists, Ryana Moss (Neah Bay High School) had 11 points and six rebounds and Alexa Mackey had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Ciera Tugade Agasiva added eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
The two victories have Peninsula (2-0, 11-2) in first place in the North Region, tied with Olympic. The Pirates next play at Bellevue at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

PORT ANGELES —Edmonds got up huge over the Peninsula men 58-29 after the first half, but the Pirates improved in the second half, scoring 62 points after the final 20 minutes, but still falling 110-91.
Surprisingly, despite the high-scoring final, neither team got off a lot of 3-pointers. They did both shoot well overall. The Tritons shot
48.8 percent from 2-pointer the field (40-for-82), while the Pirates shot 88.5 percent on their free throws (23-for-26).
What it came down to was rebounds. Edmonds outboarded the Pirates 45-26 and had a 22-9 edge on offensive rebounds.
Isaiah Lopez hit five 3-pointers and scored 27. Jaiden Blackmon had 15 points and Antonio Odum had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Paxton Heitsch also scored 12 and Akeem Sulaiman 11. Deshawn Rushmeyer had seven points and led the team with seven rebounds.
Peninsula (0-2, 6-9) next plays at Bellevue (2-0, 7-10) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
