At long last, EA Sports released its first deep dive into the upcoming College Football 26 video game.
The Orlando-based company posted a video on YouTube narrated by Kirk Herbstreit on Friday morning, June 20, as well as details on the Campus Huddle section of the game’s website. The news focused on the changes to the gameplay, including changes to players’ wear and tear throughout the game, new formations and packages, and perhaps most importantly, pre-snap adjustments, including dynamic substitutions and customizable zone coverage assignments.
This marked the first look at the game after select players participated in a closed beta version June 6-8. Future deep dives are expected to tackle other highly anticipated new features, such as the high school football portion of the popular Road to Glory mode. For now, here’s a look at what’s new in the gameplay, plus the release date for College Football 26:

College Football 26 gameplay features
Here’s a breakdown of the changes to gameplay for CFB 26 as revealed June 20:
- Dynamic subs: Players can be swapped on and off the field with a simple button push before the snap instead of navigating the menu while calling a play, speeding up the gameplay. Press Up on the D-pad to open the quick menu, and cycle through the full squad or quickly scroll through specific groups such as the defensive line or skill players on offense.
- Wear and tear: Players will give visual cues before the snap when they might need a rest. The Campus Huddle says quarterbacks will change their demeanor when their health falls below 60%. These warnings will also appear on the Dynamic Subs quick menu. Customizable auto-subs are available. Players will also be impacted more by the weather conditions: The video showcased injuries as a result of playing in the cold and snow. The amount of wear and tear players experience can be adjusted in Dynasty mode.
- Heisman tier: Platinum-level players will receive a boost in attributes when they get hot during games, unlocking Heisman Tier, signified by a green flash around the player’s icon. Herbstreit said in the video that this “captures those unexplainable moments when a player singlehandedly takes over a game.”
- Playbook expansion: With more than 300 real-life coaches now part of the game, EA Sports is implementing more than 2,800 new plays and more than 45 new formations, plus new option and motion types from last season. The video highlighted Penn State putting offensive linemen out wide. Multiple players can be put into motion simultaneously, and a new Gadget position on the depth chart lets him be easily slotted across multiple formations.
- Player archetypes: 10 new player types were introduced in the video, bringing the total in the game to 84. The ones focused on in the video included Coffin Corner and Field Flip for punters, and Mega Leg and Chip Shot for kickers. Not all of these are positive: Shorter quarterbacks will see receivers’ icons disappear if bigger linemen are in their line of vision.
- Stadium pulse: Night games in the toughest environments in college football will get even louder and disrupt pre-snap signal-calling even more than last year. If it’s loud enough, the play clock will even malfunction.
- Physics-based tackling: Higher-ranked defensive players will win plays more distinctly than last year’s version.
- Custom zones: Players can now adjust defensive coverages, such as how deep a safety sits in zone.
- Block steering: Players can control where offensive linemen guide their defenders, opening up holes for running backs or leading pass rushers away from the quarterback. Similarly, 12 new stunts are available for the defense.
