The College Football Playoff committee let Channel 2 Action News get a closer look at the trophy. Officials brought it to our midtown Atlanta studios on Thursday.

This year marks the first time for the expanded 12-team playoff. The winner still gets the same prize at the end of the game.

“Just because it’s a 12 team playoff, it’s not a different trophy. Same trophy,” said Ryan Allen Hall, the Senior Director of Public Events & Sponsorship for CFP.

The beautiful piece of hardware takes about four months to make.

“It’s made from the same foundry that makes the Oscars. So 24 karat gold same. And then it is 50 pounds,” Hall said.

This season, it’ll come down to the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish to see who will get to take it home to Columbus or South Bend. The winner will get to keep it forever and don’t have to give it back.

“And that is one of the unique things. You can only touch it when you win. So no one is allowed to touch the trophy. And then when they lift it up that night, it’s magical no matter what happens,” Hall said.

While no teams from Georgia are competing for the title, the City of Atlanta still gets some bragging rights. Atlanta is the first city to host the national championship game twice in the College Football Playoff era.

“Atlanta does big events better than anyone, so we don’t have to worry about the little things you allow us to enhance. Because we know you got it taken care of,” Hall said. “So hopefully this time fans feel even more special.”
