College football rankings: ESPN debuts analytics-based top 25 poll for 2025 season

Ahead of spring practice across college football, ESPN has released its early SP+ top 25 rankings for 2025, another power ranking of sorts designed to pre-grade several perceived national championship contenders next fall. ESPN’s SP+ rankings are based on three factors — returning production, recent recruiting and recent history — and “weighted by their predictiveness,” according to ESPN’s Bill Connelly.

The rankings are an opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency and essentially, another independent group of offseason power rankings. With spring practice set to kick off this month, numerous quarterback battles have spiked the conversation nationally.

And with the transfer portal re-opening for a 10-day stretch in April, rosters haven’t yet been finalized this offseason. That’s not going to happen until schools break for summer in a few months ahead of the 2025 season.
