
Early college football rankings for 2025 are out in full force before the start of spring practice. The first year of College Football Playoff expansion went out with a bang thanks to Ohio State’s heroics and now early opinions are in for next fall, narratives already forming around a handful of teams expected to be in the national conversation.
For this exercise, 247Sports compiled a composite list of early rankings from the following publications (including a detailed 247Sports analysis) to get an average rating — CBS Sports, The Sporting News, Action Network, Athlon, The Athletic, Bleacher Report, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, USA Today and Yahoo Sports — and then subjectively categorized teams as overrated or underrated.
Many of these teams have matchups featured in 2025’s most important games across the Power 4, including a series of opening weekend contests that could be impactful down the road when the playoff selection committee begins their deliberations in November.
