College football rankings: SEC power tiers redefined for November home stretch

7. LSU Tigers (6-2, 3-1)

LSU is frustrating and unpredictable. The same team that trailed by 17 points at South Carolina earlier this season is the group that erased another deficit against Ole Miss to win in overtime. LSU largely dominated Texas A&M for 2.5 quarters at Kyle Field in Week 9 before the wheels came off and Garrett Nussmeier forgot how to play turnover-free football at quarterback. This team has been just as confusing for Brian Kelly, who said as much after the game.

6. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2, 3-2)

Alabama faces a playoff elimination game of sorts in Baton Rouge on Nov. 9, another barometer-type matchup for Kalen DeBoer and how his first season with be graded with the Crimson Tide. Right now, he gets a satisfactory score — which passes at most programs across college football, but not at Alabama. Crimson Tide fans expect to be elite, but another loss means this campaign falls well short of lofty expectations and overall goals.
