College notebook: SRJC baseball team back on hot streak and No. 1 in state

The Bear Cubs had won five in a row coming off their first loss of the season and remained in the top spot in the state rankings in the most recent poll this week.

The Santa Rosa Junior College baseball team has won five in a row coming off its first loss of the season and remained in the top spot in the state rankings in the most recent poll this week.

The Bear Cub (25-1, 12-1 Big 8) were set to play at American River in the second game of a three-game series Thursday, but weather had pushed the starting time back.

SRJC won the first game of the series 8-6 on Monday to push its current winning streak to five. Caze Derammelaere and Josh Martin each went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the win.

SRJC swept Sierra last week with wins of 8-1, 7-6 and 13-2 and received 17-of-18 first-place votes in the California Community College Athletic Association poll this week. The Bear Cubs also stayed at No. 11 in the nation in this week’s Perfect Game JC rankings.

SRJC softball

The Bear Cubs fell out of the CCCAA top 20 this week after dropping both games of a doubleheader at Cosumnes River last Friday but rebounded with a 6-4 win over No. 14 San Joaquin Delta on Tuesday.

SRJC (15-10, 8-5) rallied to the win with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kali Garcia tied the game on an RBI single before Mira Olvera put the Bear Cubs on top with another RBI knock. Mya Gonzalez was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 6-4.

Gonzalez finished with three RBIs, Olvera went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Mia Avila pitched six innings with eight hits and two earned runs allowed to earn the win.

The Bear Cubs had won seven in a row and climbed to No. 16 in the CCCAA before being swept by Cosumnes River. They currently sit in third place in the Big 8.

SSU softball

The SSU softball team has won three in a row and six of its last eight after a doubleheader sweep of Western Oregon on Wednesday with wins of 5-3 and 9-1.

Kaiya Dickens had two hits and two RBIs and Carissa Marques had a pinch-hit two-run double in the 5-3 win. The Seawolves (21-8, 8-12) then scored seven runs in the third in the 9-1 win that ended after five innings. Sophia Newcomb doubled in a two-hit day with two RBIs, Sam Delgado had two hits with an RBI and Lauren Mirtoni had two hits and scored twice.
