College notes: NU’s Jack Lausch resuming baseball career

Jack is back on the diamond.

Northwestern has announced that quarterback Jack Lausch will play baseball for the Wildcats this spring.

Lausch, a 2022 Brother Rice graduate, played both football and baseball during his time as a Crusader. He was named a top 250 prospect in the 2022 MLB Draft, according to Baseball America.

“Jack is an elite athlete with a high-level skillset and has an opportunity to make an immediate impact,’’ Wildcats baseball coach Ben Greenspan said in a press release. “His leadership qualities and character attributes are exactly what we look for in players, and we are thrilled to have Jack as part of our program.”

As a senior, Lausch was voted the 2022 Chicago Catholic League Baseball Player of the Year, was named to the Class 4A All-State team, and earned All-State Academic Team honors, given to 26 of the top student-athletes across the state of Illinois.

Lausch led Brother Rice to a Class 4A third-place finish. He hit .386 with a .521 on-base percentage with five home runs, 43 RBI, 51 runs scored and 33 stolen bases in his senior season.

The Chicago native started 10 games at quarterback for the Northwestern football team in 2024. He completed 159 of 296 passes for 1,714 yards (53.7%) and seven touchdowns, while rushing 87 times for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Lausch also threw eight interceptions.

Lausch is Northwestern’s first baseball-football dual-sport athlete since Dan Kubiuk played for both programs in 2015-16. Lausch continues to be an active member of the football program and plans to participate in spring practice.

Northwestern, which was 18-34 overall and 4-20 in the Big Ten last season, opens its 2025 baseball campaign with a three-game series at Long Beach State from Feb. 14-16.
