COLLEGE REPORT: College baseball, softball seasons to get underway in February

With the calendar set to flip to February in the coming days, that means the start of the college baseball and softball seasons around the country despite the weather saying differently.

Several former Clay City and Northview standouts are among those to take the field during the months of February and March, and the Times will be there to keep readers back at home informed with their performances over the next four to five months.

Below is a list of student-athletes that will be competing on the diamond this spring:

Landon Carr (Rockhurst baseball)

Landon Carr, a junior right-handed pitcher, is set to begin his third season at Rockhurst University. Carr appeared in 10 games last year, which included three starts. He posted an 0-2 record and 15.80 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched while striking out 17 batters. Rockhurst opens its season against Bemidji State University on Feb. 14.

Peyton Lear (IWU baseball)

Peyton Lear, a freshman infielder, is set to begin his first season at Indiana Wesleyan University after starring at Northview last spring. Lear appeared in 25 games last year, most of which were spent at first base. The then-high school senior put up a batting line of .361/.460/.542 to go along with six doubles, three home runs, 26 runs scored and 25 runs batted in. Indiana Wesleyan opens its season at the Visit Kingsport Invitational on Feb. 7.

Caden Schrader (ISU baseball)

Caden Schrader, a freshman infielder/pitcher, is set to begin his first season at Indiana State University after starring at Northview last spring. Schrader appeared in 25 games last year, most of which were spent at shortstop or on the mound. At the plate, the-then high school senior put up a batting line of .292/.429/.486 to go along with four doubles, two triples, two home runs, 22 runs scored and 11 runs batted in. On the mound, the hard-throwing right-hander made 12 appearances, most of which came in starts. Schrader posted a 6-2 record and a 1.90 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched while striking out 80 batters. Indiana State opens its season at Wagner on Feb. 14.

Gavin Morris (ISU baseball)

Gavin Morris, a senior right-handed pitcher, is set to begin his first season at Indiana State University after transferring from the University of Southern Indiana where he spent his first three collegiate years. As a junior at USI last year, Morris appeared in 13 games, which included 10 starts. He posted a 4-4 record and a 7.08 ERA in 48.1 innings pitched while striking out 22 batters. Indiana State opens its season at Wagner on Feb. 14.

Javier Higham (Marian baseball)

Javier Higham, a freshman infielder, is set to begin his first season at Marian Ancilla College after starring at Northview last spring. Higham appeared in 25 games last year, most which were spent a second base or designated hitter. The then-high school senior put up a batting line of .297/.381/.365 to go along with three doubles, one triple, 14 runs scored and 12 runs batted in. Marian Ancilla opens its season at Milwaukee Area Technical College on Feb. 14.

Lauren Sackett (ISU softball)

Lauren Sackett, a redshirt junior right-handed pitcher, is set to begin her third season at Indiana State University. Sackett appeared in 29 games last year, which included 24 starts. She posted an 8-16 record and a 5.92 ERA in 106.1 innings pitched while striking out 84 batters. Indiana State opens its season at the Florida Gulf Coast University Tournament on Feb. 7.

Hailey Hofmann (Rose Hulman softball)

Hailey Hofmann, a senior outfielder, is set to begin her fourth season at Rose Hulman. Hofmann appeared in 37 games last year, most of which were spent in right field. She posted a batting line of .095/.095/.095 to go along with two runs scored. Rose Hulman opens its season in Melbourne, Florida on March 3.

Sophie Moshos (Appalachian State softball)

Sophie Moshos, a junior left-handed pitcher, is set to begin her first season at Appalachian State University after spending her first two collegiate years at Transylvania University. As a sophomore at Transylvania, Moshos appeared in 27 games last year, which included 22 starts. Moshos posted a 16-5 record and a 1.26 ERA in 144.2 innings pitched while striking out 181 batters. Appalachian State opens its season at the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 14.

Charly Koehler (NKU softball)

Charly Koehler, a senior infielder, is set to begin her fourth season at Northern Kentucky University. Koehler appeared in 29 games last year, most of which were spent as a pinch runner and a defensive replacement at second base. She scored 11 runs and stole two bases. Northern Kentucky opens its season Pinnacle Blue Hose Invitational on Feb. 7.

Lexi Thompson (IWU softball)

Lexi Thompson, a freshman infielder/catcher, is set to begin her first season at Indiana Wesleyan University after starring at Clay City last spring. Thompson appeared in 25 games last year, most of which were spent at shortstop. The then-high school senior put up a batting line of .487/.604/1.079 to go along with seven doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 37 runs scored and 36 runs batted in. Indiana Wesleyan opens its season at Olivet Nazarene University on Feb. 18.
