Over a dozen schools have canceled the traditional Spring College Game, which serves as a showcase for fans to get a glimpse of the future of their program in a scrimmage. So, what did Colorado‘s Deion Sanders and Syracuse‘s Fran Brown suggest? Reshaping the game to raise the profile of both players and fans alike.
“Why are we going to stop having a spring game? That’s for your fans, not for you. People are itching for football,” Brown said on this week’s episode of “The Triple Option“. “Now, the fact that you don’t want to play a spring game—what are fans supposed to do? What do they have to look forward to?”
Unfortunately for Brown and Sanders, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee rejected their proposal but indicated that it could be reconsidered in the future. So, what does a school have to gain by playing another school in the spring?
“Both teams are trying to figure out where they stand. Sometimes, the best way to do that is to face off against another team,” Brown said emphatically. “We can learn a lot from it. We can learn about our team, and coaches can learn from each other.”
Three-time National Champion Urban Meyer, while not having considered such a proposal, was intrigued. “It makes you sit back and say, ‘WHAT?’ but then you think, that’s a hell of an idea,” Meyer said after hearing the proposal.
“The one thing you need to understand is that college boys are different from NFL men,” Meyer continued, comparing the idea to the split practices that NFL teams hold during training camp. “Great NFL teams and great college teams know how to practice, but if you lose one player, it can be incredibly destructive to the season. All it takes is a 17-year-old trying to make an impression and taking out a quarterback’s Achilles. I like the idea, but no, I wouldn’t do it.”
While the proposal won’t happen this year, it could potentially shape the future of spring games if the NCAA decides to allow it.
