With offseason workouts and minicamps underway for the Browns, Shedeur Sanders is battling to prove he can eventually start at quarterback for Cleveland. The former Colorado football legend has received positive and negative feedback from the media on his QB1 potential.
Newsweek’s Evan Massey recently reported on Sanders’ murky status in Cleveland’s quarterback rotation.
“Sanders has a lot of work to do, there is no denying that,” Massey wrote. “However, he has looked more like an NFL quarterback so far this offseason than Gabriel, who was the Browns’ third-round pick … That isn’t to say that he’ll be higher on the depth chart than Gabriel to begin the season. No one knows what head coach Kevin Stefanski and company will choose to do with their quarterback room.”
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has already praised Sanders for his work ethic this offseason, but the fifth-round rookie has plenty of work to do ahead of his first NFL campaign.
Massey isn’t the only one who views Sanders as a better option than Dillon Gabriel, his rookie QB counterpart. However, training camp in July will likely give the Browns a more surefire assessment of their young quarterbacks
When Sanders debuts for the Browns in September, he could realistically be starting or sitting at the bottom of the depth chart. Only time will tell if the former Buffaloes superstar can work his way up Cleveland’s four-man ladder of signal-callers.
As talented as he is, Sanders shouldn’t give up on the possibility of running Cleveland’s offense come September. Massey clearly believes in Sanders’ potential as a future starter.
“Even though Sanders isn’t being given much of a chance to begin the season as the starter, his main goal should be to end it in that position.”
