Colorado, Syracuse spring game decision could come by ‘end of this week’

Deion Sanders has drastically improved Colorado football, bringing in must-see players and placing the Buffs in the national spotlight. But he is never satisfied and continues to try to improve the sport. His current endeavor revolves around Colorado’s spring game, where he is attempting to make it an NFL-style exhibition game against another program.

Sanders got the attention of Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, and the two have been working to make a joint spring game and practice happen in Boulder. Last week, the two programs submitted paperwork to the NCAA requesting a waiver to hold a game in April. The NCAA does not allow teams to have games or practices against an opposition.

Brown spoke with On3’s Pete Nakos this week, and the Syracuse head man seems to think some clarity on the situation should be coming soon.

“I’m just waiting on the NCAA to come back to allow us to do this, so this could be huge for college football,” Brown told Nakos. “So people are being able to do this and having this opportunity, I think this will help us a lot. They should get back to us by the end of this week. As soon as they asked for it [the paperwork], we gave it to them within the next hour. Boom, boom, boom. We should get some news back in the next two days. This will be great for college football. We need this. Just think, when we get to play Colorado, because I’m saying we, I’m trying to speak ahead, it’ll be a packed stadium. We’ll get a chance to compete.” – via Pete Nakos On3 (subscription)

NCAA approval of the game would be a landmark decision that could improve college spring football. Glorified practices are a thing of the past, and spring football needs to be revitalized. Fran Brown and Deion Sanders seem to have the perfect solution.

Folsom Field would sell out fast for a spring exhibition against the Orange. Both programs would benefit significantly from scrimmaging another team, where players could get live reps against someone in a different uniform.

All the signs point to a Syracuse-Colorado spring game in Boulder, but it appears the NCAA has the final say. According to Brown, we should find out soon whether they approve of the joint exhibition.
