Colorado‘s quarterback history has been up and down since Darian Hagan and Kordell Stewart started for the Buffs in the early 1990s. Koy Detmer, Joel Klatt, Sefo Liufau and Steven Montez were all solid signal callers, but I think every CU fan would say that Shedeur Sanders was a different type of player.
Sanders come to Colorado with his father Deion and single handily change Colorado football. He set several records including single season passing yards (4,134), single game passing yards (510) and career passing touchdowns (64).
Sanders finished his Colorado career with 7,364 yards passing, 64 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions. He was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm winner. In the upcoming NFL draft, Sanders projects to one of the top quarterbacks selected and a likely top-5 overall selection.
Last week, ESPN’s Bill Connelly ranked the top 90 college quarterbacks in the 2000s. Sanders come in at No. 84 right behind former NFL MVP Matt Ryan.
“After throwing for 6,963 yards and 70 TDs (and winning 23 games) at Jackson State, Sanders moved with his father to Colorado in 2023; the Buffaloes had gone 1-11 before their arrival but rose to 4-8, then 9-4 in the quarterback’s two seasons running the show. Sanders and Travis Hunter became the faces of a Buffaloes turnaround.”
Shedeur Sanders was a life line for Colorado football and after a 1-11 season in 2022, CU needed a major culture shift. Who knows how high Sanders could have gotten on Connelly’s list if he had played all four years at Colorado. No matter what, Sanders will also be remembered as one of faces of this era of Colorado football.
