Colts meeting with college football’s 2023 leading rusher at NFL Combine

The Indianapolis Colts are among several teams meeting with Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon at the NFL Combine, according to Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network.

Along with the Colts, Denver, Kansas City, and Miami, among others, are also having a formal meeting with the running back.

Gordon is a bigger back, listed at 6-2 – 225 pounds. He put together a very impressive 2023 season, totaling 1,732 rushing yards at 6.1 yards per attempt with 21 rushing touchdowns.

Among all running backs that season, Gordon led college football in rushing. He was also 11th in yards per rush, 12th in missed tackles forced, and third in explosive gains, according to PFF.

This past year, however, Gordon saw his production dip. He totaled only 854 yards at 4.5 yards per rush with 12 touchdowns. He generated fewer missed tackles, averaged fewer yards after contact, and had far fewer explosive runs of 10-plus yards.

In addition to his production on the ground, Gordon did see his share of opportunities as a pass-catcher, totaling 69 receptions over his final two seasons.

For more on Gordon’s game, here is some of what Lance Zierlein of NFL.com wrote in his scouting report:

“Big-workload back with a skill set that requires a physical, downhill run scheme. Gordon is tight-hipped and forced to run linear tracks. He plays with adequate decisiveness and interior vision but lacks the agility to cut sharply or slip tackles in tight quarters. When he gets going downhill he becomes a battering ram, slamming through tackles and adding tough yards after contact. He’s good in the screen game and could improve his protection in time.”

With these combine interviews, it’s important to keep in mind that prospects are meeting with numerous teams throughout this week.

Running back is a position where the Colts should be looking to add depth. For one, improvement in that area can help take some of the workload off Jonathan Taylor’s shoulders. But in addition to that, the Colts should be looking to add a pass-catching element as well–something they didn’t have last season.

“Definitely a position that we need to make sure we have enough,” general manager Chris Ballard said on Tuesday at the NFL Combine. “And that’s nothing against the guys we had last year. But I will say this, Zack Moss, who ended up in Cincinnati, Zack Moss was excellent for us. He was excellent. So we do have to get some more production.”
