Craig Breslow Provides Update On Plan For Top Red Sox Prospect

Red Sox brass surely appreciated Marcelo Mayer’s willingness to be extra versatile, but Boston isn’t opening up the playbook for one of its top prospects too wide quite yet.

At Fenway Fest last month, Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed Mayer would start taking reps at other infield positions. The plan was partially orchestrated by the 22-year-old himself, who informed coaches he’d even happily play the outfield if that was best for the club.

At this point, however, the Red Sox aren’t keen on seeing how Mayer would fare on the grass. While Craig Breslow on Tuesday confirmed Boston will “move Marcelo around,” it won’t be too outside his area of expertise.

“At this point, probably just in the infield,” Breslow told reporters about the plan for Mayer, as seen on NESN. “First big league camp we’ll want to maintain some level of familiarity. We’re very excited about what a number of those young guys are going to bring and we want to ensure this camp is productive not just us in terms of getting to see them work but in terms of them getting exposure to a big league environment.”

Of course, Mayer won’t be the only Red Sox prospect covered by a spotlight this spring training. Fellow talented up-and-comers like Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell also figure to receive significant attention in Fort Myers, Fla.

But Alex Cora won’t be perturbed by the microscope. Boston’s manager clearly appreciates how fortunate the organization is to have a robust farm system.
