{KXLG – Mitchell, SD} Dakota Wesleyan University has announced the promotion of Sam Nicholson to Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball program. Nicholson becomes the 22nd head coach in the program’s history, stepping up after serving two seasons as the team’s Assistant Coach.
During his two seasons as an assistant, Nicholson played a key role in player development and program advancement. The Tigers made a National Tournament appearance and produced seven All-Conference selections, including one Freshman of the Year.
A native of Blair, Neb., Nicholson joined DWU in the summer of 2023. His previous coaching experience includes a stint as an assistant coach at Dakota State University, a non-conference rival, under veteran coach Gary Garner. He also served as a graduate assistant at NCAA Division II Concordia University, St. Paul. He began his coaching career as a student assistant at the University of South Dakota, where he was part of the staff during the Coyotes’ 2017 Summit League Championship season.
Nicholson holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from the University of South Dakota (2020) and a Master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia-St. Paul (2022).
DWU Director of Athletics Ross Cimpl expressed his enthusiasm for Nicholson’s promotion, stating, “Sam has earned this opportunity with his work ethic and his ability to build meaningful relationships with players and recruits. The future of DWU Men’s Basketball is very bright, and I’m confident we have the right leader in place to achieve our high expectations and goals.”
Dakota Wesleyan Athletics will host a press conference to formally introduce Coach Nicholson on Wednesday, April 30, at 4:00 p.m. in the Sherman Center. The event is open to the public and media, and will also be streamed online with further details to be announced.
