Dan Lanning is now a top-five highest-paid coach in college football.
According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Lanning and Oregon agreed to an amended six-year contract that will increase his base pay to $2 million per year. He will now make almost $11 million annually, the fourth most among college football coaches behind Georgia’s Kirby Smart ($13.3 million), Ohio State’s Ryan Day ($12.5 million) and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney ($11.1 million).
Oregon and Dan Lanning have agreed on an amended 6-year contract that increases his annual pay by $2 million, sources tell @YahooSports. The fully-guaranteed deal averages nearly $11M annually – a significant investment by the university putting the 38-year old top 5 nationally.

While Lanning’s base pay has increased, his buyout has not. Dellenger also reported Thursday that if Lanning leaves Oregon for another school, the 38-year-old would still owe Oregon $20 million, a number both parties agreed to when he became the Ducks’ head coach in 2022.
In three seasons at Oregon, Lanning has led the Ducks to a 35-6 record, as well as a Big Ten championship and one College Football Playoff appearance in 2024. Before his time in Eugene, Lanning was a defensive coordinator at Georgia (2018-21) and had stints at Memphis (2016-17), Alabama (2015), Sam Houston State (2014), Arizona State (2012-13) and Pitt (2011).
