The bright lights of scrutiny are shining upon the Pittsburgh Penguins at a local and national level. Pittsburgh Hockey Now also put Mike Sullivan’s situation under the microscope while TSN asked the pertinent question, “Can the Penguins season be saved?” Sportico put out NHL team valuations, and the Penguins are worth a lot of money as franchise valuations rose across the board. Elsewhere in the Daily, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded away a defenseman, and the Detroit Red Wings traded away Olli Maatta. Connor McDavid is out for a while, and Chicago missed out on a Jake Guentzel trade and is now getting frustrated with a slow start.
And Tristan Jarry got a shootout win in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, but gave up at least one (really) bad goal.
The Live Chat is now part of our podcast! I had some very poorly timed computer problems, so I had to pause a couple of times during the first few minutes of the show, but we had guest Francis Anzalone with some insights into what it’s like in the Penguins coach’s room, and his take on Sullivan’s future. I’ll put the video link below, but I think we’re doing a lot of smart work. I don’t think anyone is doing more to explain the issues than we are. But as part of our podcast, I’ll make a point to have a few conversations per week so we have a few episodes. I haven’t yet figured out all of the details–as always, you’ll tell me. I’ll do a lot of different things, and what you like .. I’ll do more of. Sound like a plan?
I’ll have the Apple and Spotify links soon.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Before you read this, take a wild guess how much the Penguins are worth. Go ahead. I would have missed by $400 million. Here’s the new Penguins valuation.
How about Mike Sullivan? No, he’s not on the hot seat, but the situation is changing. It surely seems with changes, and changes, and more changes, that Sullivan is coaching for to stop the losing and to avoid the hot seat.. It’s a full on take of the Penguins coaching situation.
PHN Video: Here’s the live chat video. I think our conversation with Anzalone about the coaching situation and the team’s mistakes was worth the price of admission. And then we kept going… It was a lot of fun, and maybe my best? The conversation never waned. It felt pretty good. Check out the Penguins live chat.
Steelers Now: Not cool. The Steelers squashed the Giants comeback hopes on the final drive of the game. However, the Giants offensive tackle called out T.J. Watt as only making “one impact play.” Oh, that’s not good to call out T.J. Watt.
Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Bob Nutting. The grinch that stole baseball has a small window beginning this winter to invest in the team and quickly build a winner. Here’s the full scoop from Danny Demilio on the Pirates opportunity.
WBS won 4-3 in a shootout, but this is the type of mental error that has dogged him

NHL Trades, News, & Natiojal Hockey Now
Colorado Hockey Now: The injury-shortened Colorado Avalanche are using defenseman Oliver Kylington at forward. In the meantime, the management group is looking for a forward and is scouring the NHL trade market.
NHL.com: The Maple Leafs finally got the trade they were looking for. Defenseman Timothy Liljegren is on his way to the San Jose Sharks for a nice return package.
Detroit Hockey Now: Utah. Olli Maatta. It’s been a lifetime since he had too much fun at the Stanley Cup parade. The Utah Yeti’s? are decimated by injuries and needed some blue line help. They decided on Maatta in the Red Wings trade.
TSN Spotlight Video: Craig Button steps to the plate with the big question about the Penguins season. Is it salvageable? Button has some smart insights, but he’s not bullish on the Penguins.
News notes: Connor McDavid is out for two-to-three weeks with a lower body injury. Let’s see how Edmonton handles it. Toronto remains the most valuable NHL franchise, worth about $3.66 billion.
Is that all?
TSN video: Nick Robertson is a healthy scratch in Toronto because the opponent was big. Coach Craig Berube is already breaking a few eggs, and the player reacted.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Here they come. Walking down the street. They’re getting the funniest looks from everyone they beat. It was the Hughes Bowl Wednesday as all three brothers were on the ice, and the Vancouver Canucks were no match for the New Jersey Devils.
