The wheels are turning as it pertains to Michigan football and its penalties for the Connor Stalions saga and alleged in-person scouting.
Two former coaches — Jesse Minter and Steve Clinkscale — independently negotiated show cause penalties with the NCAA, which will be in effect while they’re in the NFL. On Monday morning, ESPN revealed that Michigan football is suspending head coach Sherrone Moore for two games (Week 3 vs. Central Michigan and Week 4 at Nebraska) for deleting text messages with Stalions, which the NCAA views as failure to cooperate with the investigation.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde, we now know when the committee of infractions will take place, and ultimately a potential resolution to this almost two-year saga.
Michigan is not expected to face any sort of postseason bans or the vacation of any wins. However, the Wolverines could face further limitations as it pertains to recruiting or scholarships, according to multiple reports. Former head coach Jim Harbaugh and Stalions both are expected to receive show-cause penalties for their actions.
It’s unclear at this juncture whether or not the NCAA is set on accepting Michigan’s self-imposed suspension of Moore for the two games or if it will levy a stronger punishment. During ‘Burgergate,’ Michigan self-imposed three games upon Harbaugh, but it was not accepted by the NCAA, and it instead issued a four-year show-cause penalty. Michigan has already been punished for the Stalions saga as the Big Ten suspended Harbaugh for the final three games of the 2023 season.
