ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Dickinson baseball team returned to action on Friday afternoon attempting to salvage a much needed split with Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg College at Coca-Cola Park home of the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs. For the second straight game the Red and White jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against the Mules. However, much lik Tuesday the Mules mounted a rally when needed to claim a 7-3 win.
Quick Notes
Final Score – Mules 7, DEVILS 3
Records – Dickinson (9-12, 0-4 CC) | Muhlenberg (13-10, 3-1 CC)
Pitching Decision – W – Charlie Siper (3-0) | L – Grayson Walker (1-2)
- Both teams picked up base runners in the frame without a hit being recorded. However, starting pitchers Brendan Hughes and Grayson Walker pitched around the potential trouble.
- A walk to Josh Markley and error on the shortstop allowed Dylan Posencheg to reach putting men at second and third with two away. That brought Ryan Thompson to the dish and he would work a free pass filling the pillows for Luke Gartland. He stepped into the box and lashed a two-run single to right-center, before Kevin Schmidt ripped one into right driving home Thompson to make it 3-0 after two-and-a-half.
- Unfortunately, for Walker he was unable to deliver the vital shutdown frame as a hit batter and a pair of singles resulted in two crossing home trimming the margin to just one (3-2 ) through two.
- Dickinson was unable to get the offense back on track over the third and fourth with Hughes putting the Red and White away “six up and six down”.
- A DC miscue and single put the Mules in business with one away for Jack Kent. He would give the home side a 4-3 edge with a two-run double into right-center. Walker then recorded a strikeout and flyout to end the frame.
- The top-half saw Gartland be plunked by a pitch and Schmidt draw a walk to end the day for Hughes as he was replaced on the mound by Siper. Matt Torres was the first to greet him with a sacrifice bunt, before Kaden Sigmon worked a free pass to load the bags for Kyle Bailey. Unfortunately, he would bounce into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
- Following a quiet top of the frame, Aidan Legner started things off with a single which led to Sam Bliss entering the game for Walker and prevented anything from happening by striking out the side.
- Dickinson would get a one-out single off the stick of Bailey, but a popout for Markley and a flyout by Ethan Sodl stalled any possible rally for the Devils.
- A walk and double allowed Muhlenberg to make it 5-3 with two down. Then, a single for Marc Quarrie, double by Hughes along with a single from Spencer Hobson allowed the Mules to push the margin out to 7-3 with an inning to go.
- For the second straight game Ethan Brochin entered the game looking to finish things off for the Mules. A one-out base hit by Thompson gave DC one of the needed base runners, unfortunately, a flyout and strikeout ended the game.
