Rafael Devers did not demand a trade from the Boston Red Sox, but the three-time MLB All-Star wasn’t against a relocation either.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow confirmed as much when speaking to reporters during a video conference Monday night, about 24 hours after Boston traded Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Breslow’s sentiments surfaced after reports that Devers requested a trade, but did not demand one.
“There were times during the course of conversations with Raffy’s camp where they had indicated that perhaps a fresh start would be best for both sides,” Breslow told reporters, as seen on NESN. “We were committed to trying to work through this and, like Sam (Kennedy) said, ultimately we weren’t able to achieve that alignment.”
Red Sox brass said the organization and player had differing view points, which was summed up as “alignment.” It was the root of why Devers was traded to the Giants for right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, left-hander Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs III and right-handed prospect Jose Bello.
“But this does represent that chance to reset on our end, and for Raffy to get a fresh start with a historic franchise,” Breslow said. “So, that’s kind of how that came about.”

Breslow and Kennedy expressed excitement about the package returning to Boston, and optimism about how it sets the Red Sox up in the short- and long-term.
