To make room for the signing of infielder/outfielder Kiké Hernández, which was announced by the Dodgers on Tuesday, the team placed pitcher Gavin Stone on the 60-day injured list.
Use of the 60-day injured list became available for the Dodgers on Monday, the first day pitchers and catchers officially reported to spring training camp at Camelback Ranch.
Hernández signed a one-year contract worth $6.5 million.
Technically, getting placed on the 60-day injured list means the earliest Stone could possibly return is May 17, but in reality the right-hander will miss much longer than that.
Stone had a terrific bounce-back season for the Dodgers in 2024, and led the Dodgers in starts (25) and innings (140⅓) while posting a 3.53 ERA, 3.94 xERA, as well as the team’s only shutout and complete game in the last two seasons.
All after winning the fifth-starter job in spring training.
His performance was good enough that he was the only Dodgers player among the group of players to earn extra pay from the pre-arbitration bonus pool. Stone, who made $742,500 in salary in 2024, also got $350,022 from the pre-arb pool.
But Stone didn’t pitch after August 31, sidelined by a shoulder injury that required surgery on October 9.
It’s expected that the 26-year-old Stone will miss the entire season.
The signing of Hernández gives the Dodgers 16 position players on its 40-man roster.
