A potential hockey showdown between American and Russian players is making headlines after former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin floated the idea during a recent phone call. According to a Kremlin-released summary of the conversation, Trump expressed support for Putin’s proposal to organize hockey games between NHL and KHL players, with matchups in both the United States and Russia.

NHL Maintains Silence on the Proposal

While the idea of an international hockey faceoff between the NHL and the KHL may intrigue fans, the NHL itself is keeping its distance. The league quickly responded to the reports with a neutral statement, emphasizing that it was not part of the discussions.
“We have just become aware of the conversation between President Trump and President Putin,” the NHL said in a statement shared with ESPN and The Athletic. “Obviously, we were not a party to those discussions and it would be inappropriate for us to comment at this time.”

Past NHL-KHL Relations and Current Sanctions

Historically, the NHL and KHL have had a complex relationship. The leagues collaborated in the past, even staging exhibition games in 2008 and 2010. However, ties were severed in 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leading to widespread sanctions from international sports organizations.
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) imposed sanctions on Russian hockey, barring the country from international play. Last month, the IIHF extended the ban through 2026, preventing Russia from competing in the Milan Winter Olympics, the first Olympic Games in a decade to feature NHL players.
With these ongoing geopolitical tensions, the feasibility of an NHL-KHL matchup remains highly uncertain. The NHL’s reluctance to engage with the KHL in recent years suggests the league is unlikely to endorse such an event, especially given the current international sanctions and political climate.

The Unlikely Revival of NHL-KHL Games

Despite Trump and Putin’s discussions, an NHL-KHL hockey series faces major roadblocks. Political factors, league regulations, and international sanctions create significant challenges in bringing this idea to life.

While hockey fans might appreciate the potential for high-level competition, the reality is that NHL teams and players are unlikely to participate without official league backing. Unless circumstances change dramatically, the prospect of NHL and KHL teams facing off on the ice remains little more than a political conversation rather than a legitimate sporting event.
