AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Paine College is in good hands thanks to a coach who’s pulling the weight of two athletic programs at the same time.
Melvin Marshall has been the head baseball coach for the Lions since 2011, but not many know of his other sideline gig.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Paine College, like many others, went through a sporting hiatus.
It wasn’t until after the fact that the school was looking for a new head basketball coach.
Little did Marshall know that his name would be called for that opening.
“I have a passion for both sports and doing something I love,” he said.
This year marks the fourth season for Marshall on the hardwood, while also tackling baseball during the same part of the athletic calendar.
“It’s not difficult for me, honestly,” he said. “It’s a different ballgame, a different sport, but it’s the same mentality.”
During his time at Paine, Marshall has led the baseball team to several postseason runs, as well as multiple conference championship appearances in basketball.
This season, he has the basketball team on track for the best regular season in school history.
While trophies are one thing, he says his love for helping as many student athletes as possible comes first.
“They know I have a passion for the game,” he said. “I love the game, I love those guys, and I just want them to perform on their best efforts.”
Paine’s basketball team carries a 10-game win streak into the regular season finale on Saturday against Clinton College.
