Drake Powell declares for the 2025 NBA Draft, maintaining college eligibility

As expected, Drake Powell is testing the NBA waters.

The former five-star high school prospect has officially declared for the 2025 NBA Draft. This news was first reported by Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

While there was some speculation that Powell could maintain his college eligibility while going through the NBA Draft process, Joe Tipton of On3 shot those rumors down, confirming that Powell is 100% focused on the draft.

In what looks like his lone season in Chapel Hill, Powell averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He shot 48.3% from the field and 37.9% from three-point range, the third-highest percentage from beyond the arc on the team.

Powell took to social media to make the announcement official, thanking Tar Heel nation in the process:

This is a tough blow for the UNC basketball program, as they now find themselves in the market for a starting wing. It now makes more sense why the Tar Heels have been connected to transfers, such as Andrej Stojakovic, as Powell’s departure will leave a huge void in the Tar Heels’ starting lineup.

Powell’s stock tends to differ based on which mock draft you’re looking at. He ranges anywhere from a late first-rounder to an early second-rounder, as you could make the assumption that the feedback he, and his team, has received was enough to convince him that it’s time for him to take the next step.

As for the next step for the UNC basketball program, we’ll have to wait and see how the Tar Heels pivot, with some additional resources to work with and a starting spot at the wing open for some of the transfer portal’s top targets to claim.
